 Referees

YSI provides FIFA trained referees for its games. These referees undergo 18 hours of lectures, an exam and several hours of on-the-field training. Some are paid and some volunteers. These referees not only provide service to YSI games, but to local and regional high school games, adult, and select league games. Occasionally there are not enough registered referees to conduct all of YSI's games because of other soccer events occurring around the region. On occasion, coaches or a well-versed volunteer may conduct the game.

Usually linesmen are also provided for each game. However, in case of a shortage, linesmen may be drawn from parents or siblings of a team.

YSI requires that each team provide two people to take a brief linesman course and be available if needed for a game.
Coaches, parents, and players may not argue with the referee. The referee has the right to remove a coach, parent or player from the premises as he/she deems appropriate. If a concern arises, it can be taken to the YSI tent after the game and placed in writing for YSI members to review. The coach may wish to advise his/her players and parents about proper conduct toward a referee in order to keep a game running without incident.

How can you learn to referee soccer games? YSI sponsors a Referees Clinic each fall and spring. Check here when play gets underway for the details on the spring clinic. Or you can get in touch with Jay Lehnick the YSI  Referees coordinator .
